religion

I was born in a Buddhism family. From my early age, I had to go to temple with my family. However, unlike Churches, temples in Korea didn't teach me anything about Buddha but gave me ideas that temple foods are delicious. At the beginning of middle school, I had chance to read books of Richard Dawkins. The fact that I didn't know anything about Buddha made me not to have resistance in facing the ideas of Dawkins but gave me a lot of inspiration. I am an atheist. I believe that religion is one of the evils in the human society by two reasons.

Firstly, religion itself essentially makes conflicts. Humans are social animal and they tend to give and express their ideas to others. The teachings that religions give are fundamentally same but grew differently by adapting to the society. However, people tend to ignore that fact but just believes that their religion is the truth. For example, Christianity in Korea makes a lot of conflicts with other religions such as going to temples and giving Christian prays and destroying statues of Buddha. This can be seen as the conflicts made essentially by religion.

Moreover, religion makes people irrational. human are animals with both emotion and intellect. The harmony between emotion and intellect is one of the most important tasks that people have within their lives. However, beliefs in religion makes people to follow the ideas that can also make them radical in ideas that oppose to the religion and makes them narrow sighted. I post a clip that shows how people act in churches of Korea.

Although this is only a part of Christianity, we can see that people become more emotional without rationality. Also, this makes people to follow their religious leaders not the ideas of the religion. For example, in Korea, there is a minister Jo Yong Gi. He has his birthday party in World cup stadium and has billions of money. He is also famous for his words such as tsunami in Japan is because Japanese does not believe Christian God. Rational people would criticize him for his words and acts. However, Christians in that church worships him and prays for him. This can be seen that religion makes people emotional.

The ideas of religion are pure and should be highly valued. However, when it is shown in religion, it cannot be truly valued by people but loses its value and be shown in radical and irrational acts. Thereby, I believe that religion itself currently is evil of the human society and should be changed.

  1. I was blown away by that video - wow! At first I want to dismiss them as a bunch of whackos, but at the end of the day we can at least say they were having fun. They also got a lot of exercise, and probably got rid of some stress. People always say we should try to remain youthful no matter how old we get, and I think they are achieving that by rolling around on the floor like 4 years olds. However, if and when they knock on my door and tell me I'm going to go to hell unless I join them... that's when I really start to lose respect.

I think "evil" is a big word, and I wouldn't use it in the same way you have. Sometimes it might be evil, but I hope "most of the time" it isn't, and is moreso a nice distraction from the human condition. Good post. But very very very very late.
